Chapter nineteen

Rose

Calabria, Italy

Dante looks so different. He looks angrier. I watch him from the shadows in my realm, where I can hide from him. He doesn’t even need to dream anymore; I can just pull him under.

He might come for us now that he knows where his mother and I are being kept. Well, he will come for her. He has no reason to find me anymore. He would have mostly forgotten about me by now; it’s been too long. My power would be memorable, but any lingering feelings I imagine are gone.

I can’t hold Dante in the dream for long, no matter how badly I want to keep him there and meet again. His muscles are bigger, worry clear on his face as his eyebrows pinch together. Two years. That’s all it had been to change that much. I thought as a human, he might still look the same, but he looks like a God about to pull his wrath down upon the world to save those he cares for. I hope I’m one of those.

The turn of the lock pulls me back to attention. I stand. It will be Leo now. I’m curious how he would handle punishing me. After seeing Dante, I need to feel the pain that I had caused Sofia. I’ve hurt the person he loves the most.

I’m confused when Leo smiles when he sees me. My brows furrow as I look around. I wipe all expression off my face while he examines me, be brave. “I’m sorry about hitting you, but I’m not a stupid man. That was very disrespectful of you to lie to me. You must have seen my son. He needs to come home for his duties. When he joins me, I will take you to your mother.” He places his hand on my shoulder, no doubt to be reassuring to me. I need to see my mum, but at the same time, I don't want anyone else killed.

“I never saw where he was.” The only thing I will reveal is the truth. Hope burns through my belly. Dante coming here could mean the end of me killing people for Leo. I’ve finally done enough.
